IRGC Navy holds drills in Strait of Hormuz for second day

The naval forces of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) conducted the second day of its naval drills in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday.

The naval forces of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) are conducting the second day of its naval drills in the Strait of Hormuz, showcasing 24-hour “intelligence dominance” over the strategically vital waterway.

The exercise, titled “Smart Control of the Strait of Hormuz,” on Tuesday involves rapid reaction units practicing counter-strikes against potential threats.

According to Navy Commander Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri, the IRGC maintains comprehensive surveillance at surface, aerial, and subsurface levels to ensure safe passage for the more than 80 vessels that transit the strait daily.

He also described Iranian islands in the waterway as “impenetrable fortresses” and symbols of national honor.

Tangsiri further emphasized that Iran is prepared to close the Strait of Hormuz whenever instructed by the country’s senior authorities.

“As a soldier, I declare that we are ready to carry out the task whenever our superiors order it,” he said, noting that the weapons brought into the field during wartime differ from those displayed during military exercises.

He added that there is a difference between actual operational capability in combat conditions and what is showcased in drills. The second phase of the naval exercise involved the IRGC Navy’s combat and rapid reaction units, aimed at ensuring security and safe maritime transit.

Various defensive and offensive systems were employed, which, according to military experts present, destroyed designated targets with the highest precision. Super-fast missile-launching vessels conducted missile operations from inland areas as well as from Iranian coasts and islands in the Persian Gulf, accurately striking targets in the strait.

Drone units practiced offensive and reconnaissance operations in signal-jamming environments, hitting both fixed and moving targets. During the drill, traffic through the strait was suspended for several hours.

The first phase of the maneuvers was successfully conducted across Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf on Monday.

The drills come amid heightened regional tensions and repeated US threats to attack Iran if it does not accept nuclear demands, among others.

The United States has dispatched a number of warships to regional waters near Iran, prompting authorities in Tehran to warn that even a single shot fired at the country would be met with a far-reaching and massive response targeting US assets in the region.

The drills also come as another round of indirect nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington are taking place at the Omani consulate general in Geneva, Switzerland.
