We will fight to the death for Iranian waters and islands: IRGC commander

Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Navy Commander Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri

A senior commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) says Iranians will fight to their last breath to protect their strategic islands and waterways in the Persian Gulf.

“We will stand against any enemy to the death for these islands and these waters,” said IRGC Navy Commander Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri on Monday during the first stage of drills by the force in the Persian Gulf waters.

Tangsiri described Iran's islands and waters as a symbol of the honor of the Iranian nation and its lifeline, as he insisted that they hold strategic importance in the country's defense doctrine.

He said that Iran will use weapons with high precision to protect its Persian Gulf islands in the event of a military confrontation in the region.

The general made the comments amid existing tensions over a potential military confrontation between Iran and the United States.

Tensions escalated last month after the US dispatched warships to regional waters near Iran, prompting authorities in Tehran to warn that even a single shot fired at the country would be met with a far-reaching and massive response targeting US assets in the region.

The two sides de-escalated this month when they announced plans for the resumption of nuclear talks that had collapsed in June after a joint US-Israeli aggression against Iran.

Iranian and US negotiators held a first round of talks in Oman on February 6, while a second round is planned for Tuesday.

The IRGC started a series of naval drills dubbed "Smart Control of the Strait of Hormuz" on Monday to exercise various scenarios for responding to potential attacks on the key waterway in the Persian Gulf.
