Iran defense minister visits Azerbaijan to boost security, defense ties

Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh (C) is accompanied by Azerbaijani officials after arrival at Baku airport on Friday.

Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh has traveled to Baku for talks with Azerbaijani officials.

The visit is aimed at expanding security and defense relations and exchanging views on ways to promote peace and stability in the region and between the two neighboring countries.

Nasirzadeh, who arrived in Baku Friday, was scheduled to meet Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and hold a formal meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart Zakir Hasanov.

Discussions were expected to focus on expanding bilateral cooperation, reviewing regional developments and emphasizing the role of constructive engagement in strengthening regional peace and stability.

The visit comes amid improving ties between Tehran and Baku. Last month, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi travelled to Baku and met with the country’s leaders, including President Aliyev.

Last week, Araghchi also held talks with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, with both sides reaffirming their shared determination to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation.

During those talks, Bayramov said Azerbaijan would never allow its airspace or territory to be used by any state to carry out military operations against neighboring Iran.

Relations between Tehran and Baku have notably improved under Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who visited Azerbaijan twice last year.
