‘Another horrific shooting’: ICE agents kill man during immigration crackdown in Minneapolis
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has strongly condemned “another horrific shooting” incident involving US federal agents during the ongoing immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, calling for the withdrawal of “violent” officers from the city.
Walz made the remarks in a post on X on Saturday, after a video circulating online showed a group of federal agents grappling with an individual on a city street before multiple shots were fired.
Initial reports indicated that a middle-aged man was shot and killed by a federal officer.
"I just spoke with the White House after another horrific shooting by federal agents this morning. Minnesota has had it. This is sickening," Walz said, calling for the withdrawal of “violent, untrained officers.”
The City of Minneapolis confirmed reports of a shooting involving federal law enforcement near 26th Street West and Nicollet Avenue, and said it was working to confirm details, urging residents to remain calm and steer clear of the area.
The latest incident comes less than three weeks after the fatal shooting by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on January 7 that killed Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis woman, during a federal immigration enforcement operation.
Earlier this week, a five-year-old boy was detained alongside his father in their driveway. A two-year-old girl and her father were also taken from Minneapolis to Texas, according to court records and the families’ lawyers.
The events have triggered widespread protests and calls from city leaders for federal agents to leave the region.
Earlier in the day, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Minneapolis to protest President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration crackdown.
Trump, elected on a platform of strict immigration enforcement, has deployed thousands of federal officers to Democratic-led cities, intensifying political polarization. Critics say the crackdown has involved arbitrary detentions, excessive use of force, and the targeting of children.
Saturday’s reported shooting adds to mounting controversy in Minnesota over the scale and conduct of federal immigration enforcement efforts, which have continued despite strong opposition from Governor Walz and local officials.
