Plight of Palestinian journalists

A new report by the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate warns that Israel’s war on journalists has gone far beyond direct killings and detentions to include their family members as well. The syndicate said in its report that more than seven hundred family members of journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 2023, even those who are displaced and live in tents and shelters. The report stressed that by targeting journalists' families and relatives, Israel is trying to turn journalism into an existential threat to families of media workers. It noted that the regime’s move amounts to collective punishment and a serious violation of international humanitarian law. It warned that the regime's crimes against families of media workers are aimed at silencing journalism by placing deadly pressure on journalists through their relatives. The report was released just days after the bodies of journalist, Heba Al-Abadla, and about 15 of her family members were recovered from under the rubble. They were killed in an Israeli airstrike on their home in 2023.

Slamming Somaliland recognition

Israel’s recognition of Somaliland has drawn a strong wave of global condemnations, with various countries and international organizations slamming the move as a blatant violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman strongly condemned the move, saying it breaches the UN Charter and international law. Esmaeil Baqaei warned that it’s part of Israel's broader policy to destabilize the region and fuel insecurity in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa. Somalia itself demanded Israel reverse its decision, calling the recognition an act of aggression that will never be tolerated. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation, as well as 21 Arab and Islamic countries, condemned Israel’s measure as a serious threat to international peace and security. Hamas said the move reflects the depth of international isolation of Israel, as a result of its genocidal crimes in Gaza. The African Union also denounced the decision as provocative and a serious threat to regional security. The Arab League likewise rejected the move as a clear violation of international law. Somaliland is a breakaway region of Somalia that has operated autonomously for decades without international recognition, until Israel’s announcement on Friday.

Russia-Ukraine war

Russian President Vladimir Putin has bitterly criticized the Ukrainian leadership for refusing to end the war in a peaceful way by rejecting all proposals offered to them. Putin made the remarks while visiting one of the command posts of Russian forces for operations in Ukraine. His comments also came ahead of a scheduled meeting between Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky and his American counterpart, Donald Trump, in Washington. Putin said the ringleaders of the Kiev regime are apparently in no hurry to peacefully resolve the current conflict peacefully. The Russian president warned that if the Kiev authorities do not want to resolve the matter peacefully, Russia will achieve all the goals of its special military operation by force. During his visit, Russian commanders told Putin that their forces had captured three more towns in Ukraine's Donetsk region, as well as two towns in the Zaporizhzhia region.
