Australia’s former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stay out of Australian politics following a mass shooting at a Jewish event in Sydney.

Israel was quick to blame the Australian government, accusing it of doing “nothing to stop the spread of antisemitism.”

Netanyahu said on Monday that he had written to the Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, in August, warning that the government’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state would “pour fuel on the antisemitic fire.”

Responding to those remarks, Turnbull said Netanyahu should “stay out of our politics.”

“If you’ve got that kind of commentary to make, you are not helping … and it’s not right,” he added.

Two men opened fire during a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday, killing 15 people, including a child.

According to authorities, the gunmen, a father and son, were motivated by the Daesh terrorist group.

Australia joined the United Kingdom and Canada in August in formally recognizing Palestine as a sovereign and independent state.

Prime Minister Albanese also rejected Netanyahu’s claim that Australia’s recognition of Palestine contributed to Sunday’s deadly attack.

“Overwhelmingly, most of the world recognizes a two-state solution as the way forward in the Middle East,” Albanese said.

The Australian government said that the decision was part of a coordinated international effort to revive momentum for a two-state solution and secure a ceasefire to halt Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

Netanyahu reacted angrily at the time, calling Australia's recognition of a Palestinian state an “absurdity” and a “reward for terrorism.”
