Several Italian unions in the health, education and transport sectors go on strike over the budget from hard-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government.

Protesters accused authorities of prioritizing military spending over wages, social welfare, and public services.

Hardline union USB justifies the move by arguing that wages in Italy "are the lowest in Europe", while students have joined the general strike by demonstrating in front of Rome's Parliament, demanding "money for schools, not wars".

Over 50 rallies were held across the country, with organizers warning of significant traffic disruptions.

The 2026 budget strikes come amid rising inflation, persistent wage stagnation, and ongoing debates over Italy's role in international military commitments.
