Gaza ceasefire violations
Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have claimed more Palestinian civilian lives, despite a ceasefire agreement with the resistance movement Hamas. Israeli forces targeted various areas including Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza and regions near Khan Yunis in the south. Gaza’s Health Ministry says five people were killed and 17 bodies recovered in 24 hours. Since October 20-23, over 68,850 people have been killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza. Some 226 of those were recorded after the ceasefire took effect.
Sudan conflict
The war in Sudan between the country’s Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces continues unabated. The conflict is well into its third year and has seen the RSF allegedly commit war crimes and crimes against humanity. Sudan has accused the UAE of supporting the paramilitary group, a charge that Abu Dhabi denies.
US govt. shutdown
The United States is on the brink of its longest government shutdown in history, as sharp divisions between Republican and Democratic lawmakers persist. With the shutdown now in its 32nd day, uncertainty looms over how much longer it will last, as bipartisan efforts to resolve the impasse show little sign of progress. Sources familiar with the situation say several options are being considered. Those include attempts to sway Democrats by reversing the administration’s recent mass firing of federal workers in exchange for reopening the government. The crisis has raised fears of widespread disruption, with tens of millions of Americans potentially losing access to vital services like food stamps. Experts warn that the consequences could grow even more severe if lawmakers on both sides fail to reach a resolution within the next week or two. The longest government shutdown in US history lasted 35 days from December 20-18, to January 20-19.
