Iran to extensively rely on data banks for its 2026 census

Iranian authorities say the country’s next national census will rely on information from data banks rather than interviews with people.

Iran will extensively rely on data banks for carrying out a national census next year as authorities seek to increase the accuracy of the survey.

A senior official in Iran’s Plan and Budget Organization (PBO) said on Wednesday that the 2026 Public Census of Population and Housing in Iran will be carried out using data from official registration systems, which he said would be a first of its kind in the country.

“That would be considered a big step in revolutionizing Iran’s statistical system,” said Omid Ali Parsa, who leads PBO’s operation for provincial planning and budgets.

He said carrying out censuses by relying on data banks has been tested and implemented for the past 30 years in modern economies, adding that Iran needs to do the same to be able to have a better picture of its main economic and social indicators.

Head of the Statistical Center of Iran (SCI) also said on Wednesday that the 2026 national census in Iran will minimize the use of traditional data collection methods, including direct interaction between census enumerators and households, for gathering information.

Gholamreza Goudarzi told the official IRNA news agency that the SCI and other government agencies had carried out pilot projects to test the new data collection schemes.

Goudarzi said, however, that the Iranian government has laws and regulations to ensure that data collected in next year's census will be kept confidential and will be used only for statistical purposes.

He said Iran’s next census will be carried out in October or November 2026.

A previous census conducted in November 2016 put Iran's population at nearly 80 million.
