Hundreds of Indonesian protesters rallied outside the US Embassy in Jakarta on Tuesday (October 7) to demonstrate against American support for Israel and the ongoing violence in Gaza.
The protest coincided with the two-year anniversary of Palestinian militant group Hamas' attack on Israel that triggered the ongoing offensive in the Gaza Strip.
Demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and displayed banners with messages including "No one is free until Palestine is free" and "Stop starving in Gaza" as police maintained a watchful presence around the protest site.
One protester, Heriandi, 43, made an emotional appeal to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. "Please listen to me, Mr. Prabowo, for the sake of Allah and the Prophet Muhammad. We can save our brothers and sisters in Palestine," he said.
Some protesters displayed photographs of journalists killed in Gaza, while others expressed their anger by stepping on images of US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation, has historically been a strong supporter of Palestinian independence.
