An Israeli policeman who took part in the confrontations against resistance groups during Hamas-led October 7, 2023, Operation Al-Aqsa Storm has died by suicide, adding to the mounting toll of self-inflicted deaths among Israeli forces.

Hebrew-language media outlets, citing ZAKA post-disaster response teams, said emergency respondents were called to the scene in the city of Ashkelon, located 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Tel Aviv, on Sunday evening and confirmed the officer’s death.

The Israel Police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident or the policeman’s identity.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is expected to be launched.

According to an unnamed source who works with Israeli forces suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), the officer had previously taken part in the fighting at the police station in the city of Sderot, located close to the border between the Israeli-occupied territories and the Gaza Strip.

Israeli media reports a significant surge in suicides among military personnel since the Israeli war on Gaza began in October 2023.

The Israeli Yedioth Ahronoth daily newspaper, citing a military statement, reported earlier this month that the remains of the 28-year-old soldier were discovered in the Switzerland Forest close to Tiberias on August 14.

On July 14, an Israeli soldier was found dead at a military base north of the occupied territories, in what is believed to be a suicide incident. The trooper reportedly served with the Nahal Brigade.

The Israeli army said at the time that a Military Police investigation had been opened into the soldier’s death.

A week earlier, another soldier engaged in the bloody Gaza onslaught died by suspected suicide.

Haaretz reported in May that 42 soldiers had ended their lives since the start of the Gaza genocide.

In a report last month, Yedioth Ahronoth revealed that more than 10,000 Israeli soldiers have been experiencing psychological reactions and PTSD since the outbreak of the genocidal war on Gaza.

At least 62,686 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and another 157,951 individuals have been injured in the brutal Israeli onslaught on Gaza since October 7, 2023, according to the health ministry of Gaza.
