Anti-immigrant protesters, counter-protesters face off in Liverpool

Hundreds of anti-immigrant protesters and counter-protesters gather face off in central Liverpool, separated by a large police presence, at the latest in a recent wave of demonstrations in the UK over the numbers of migrant arrivals and government policy of housing asylum seekers in hotels.

The clash, which unfolded outside the iconic St. George's Hall, is part of a wave of similar protests occurring across the UK, largely sparked by local opposition to the housing of asylum seekers.

Footage shows police officers confronting protesters as hundreds of demonstrators from the 'Abolish Asylum System' group gathered outside St George's Hall in the city center, draped in Union flags.

Clashes resulted in several arrests being made, while a large-scale counter-protest, organized by Stand Up To Racism, was also prominent, where pro-migration supporters chanted, "Shame on you."

Merseyside Police confirmed that 11 arrests were made for various public order offenses. Officers in riot gear formed a cordon between the two groups to prevent further escalation.

The protests in Liverpool mirrored demonstrations in other cities, including Bristol, London, and parts of Wales and Scotland, reflecting a growing national tension over immigration.
