Iran’s unemployment rate improved slightly in the calendar year to March 20, according to figures by the Statistical Center of Iran (SCI).
SCI figures released on Wednesday as part of an initial report on the labor market situation in Iran showed that unemployment in the country had hit 7.6% in calendar year 1403, down 0.5% from the year to late March 2024.
The figures showed that a total of 24.788 million people from Iran’s population of above 15-year-olds were employed in the year to late March, up 298,000 from the year before.
That came as some 38.066 million Iranians in the working age (16-64 years) were economically inactive over the same period, up nearly 607,000 year on year, the data showed.
The jobless rate for 16-24 year-olds, technically known as youth unemployment, was 20.1% in Iran in the year to late March, down 1.1% from the year before, the SCI said.
It said approximately 14.7% of people aged 18 to 35 were unemployed in Iran in the past calendar year, a decline of only 0.5% year on year.
The services sector was responsible for 52.7% of the jobs in the Iranian economy in the year to late March, followed by manufacturing at 33.3% and agriculture at 13.9%, the agency said.
The SCI had reported jobless rates of 7.7%, 7.5%, and 7.2% for June, September, and December quarters, respectively. However, the agency has yet to release labor data related to the March quarter.
Iran has seen a surge in the number of manufacturing and agriculture jobs in recent years amid increased activity in those sectors that experts say is a direct result of US sanctions and their impacts on imports.
