WFP: Food stocks depleted in Gaza due to all-out Israeli blockade

A critical humanitarian crisis is unfolding in the Gaza Strip as the World Food Programme (WFP) says it has completely depleted its food stocks in the besieged Palestinian territory.

The WFP said in a statement that Israel had not allowed any fuel, food, or medicine into the Gaza Strip since early March.

"Today, WFP delivered its last remaining food stocks to hot meals kitchens in the Gaza Strip. These kitchens are expected to fully run out of food in the coming days", the statement read.

The humanitarian organization said people of Gaza are struggling under Israel’s total blockade of aid entries for months.

This is the longest period of aid blockade Palestinians have ever faced, worsening their already fragile food system.

“No humanitarian or commercial supplies have entered Gaza for more than seven weeks as all main border crossing points remain closed. This is the longest closure the Gaza Strip has ever faced, exacerbating already fragile markets and food systems,” the statement read.

The WFP says the kitchens it supports have been providing a vital lifeline to Palestinians, despite meeting just 25 percent of their daily needs.

The UN agency also cautioned about a severe shortage of safe water and fuel for cooking, saying many Palestinian families are now forced to scavenge for materials to burn just to prepare a meal.

Food prices in Gaza have skyrocketed as much as 1,400 percent compared with prices during the brief ceasefire that Israel broke in March.

“More than 116,000 metric tonnes of food assistance – enough to feed one million people for up to four months – is positioned at aid corridors and is ready to be brought into Gaza” by WFP and its partners, but is being prevented due to the Israeli blockade," the WFP added.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees recently stated that Israel’s new ban on aid entry marks the longest period of aid blockade since the regime started its aggression.

The agency said the current blockade is three times longer than the initial one imposed at the start of the Israeli genocide in October 2023.

In March, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu banned aid deliveries into Gaza in a move he said was manet to pressure Hamas into accepting an extension of the first stage of the ceasefire deal, which Israel broke.

Israeli war minister Israel Katz recently said the regime would not allow any humanitarian aid into Gaza, confirming that food is being used as a tool of pressure against Hamas.

The death toll from the Israeli campaign of genocide has topped 51,300. More than 116,500 others have been injured. Most of the victims are women and children.
