Russia, North Korea fighting US hegemonic policy: Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin during a visit to North Korea on June 19, 2024.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has denounced the West, saying Russia and North Korea are fighting US hegemony across the globe.

Russia and North Korea are fighting against the decades-long "hegemonic and imperialist policy" of the United States and its allies, Putin said on Wednesday during a visit to North Korea.

Putin lashed out at the US and its allies over their schemes to change the objective of a multi-polar world.

"Today, we are fighting together against the hegemonism and neo-colonial practices of the United States and its satellites," Russian state news agencies quoted Putin as saying.

He blasted US President Joe Biden’s administration for pushing to preserve America's global domination, insisting that Washington’s plans were doomed to fail.

"The Hegemon has succeeded for a long time now," Putin said.

The Russian leader praised North Korea's cooperation with Moscow, particularly in regard to Pyongyang's support to Russia over the war in Ukraine.

North Korea's Kim Jong-un, for his part, said Moscow-Pyongyang partnership had furthered "peace and stability" in the Asia-Pacific region.

The two leaders signed Wednesday a "comprehensive strategic partnership" to further deepen military, economic and political ties.

Kim called the treaty signed between the countries a "grand, great program that will faithfully guarantee Korean-Russian relations for a century."

He said it "fully contributes to maintaining peace and stability in the region" and would put the "security situation of both countries on a more reliable foundation," Russian state news agencies reported.

Kim has praised Putin for his “correct decision and guidance... to foil the hostile forces’ escalating threats.”

He promised Putin Pyongyang's "full support", describing the war in Ukraine as a US “proxy war” to destroy Russia.

North Korea "expresses full support and solidarity with the Russian government, army and people in carrying out a special military operation in Ukraine to protect their sovereignty, security interests, as well as territorial integrity," Kim said.

Kim criticized Western military aid to Kiev and blamed the “hegemonic policy” of the United States and its Western allies for the conflict.

In the meantime, the United States and its allies have accused North Korea of supplying Russia with ammunition.

Ukraine has reportedly found fragments of North Korean munitions on the frontier.
