Iran's female mountain climber scales K2, second-highest mountain on earth
Iranian mountain climber Afsaneh Hesamifard has become the first woman from the country to scale the K2 peak in Pakistani-administered Kashmir, which has the distinction of being the second-highest mountain in the world after Mount Everest.
The Iranian mountaineer, a medical doctor by profession, and her guide Ming Temba could scale the summit at 5:40 a.m. local time (0040 GMT) on Friday.

K2, at 8,611 meters (28,251 feet) above sea level, lies in the Karakoram Range and is popularly known as the Savage Mountain.
Of the five highest mountains in the world, K2 is considered the deadliest, with approximately one person dying on its steep slopes for every four who manage to reach the summit.
The summit was reached for the first time by the Italian climbers Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni, on the 1954 Italian expedition led by Ardito Desio.
Although the summit of Everest is at a higher altitude, K2 is a more difficult and dangerous climb, due in part to its more inclement weather.
Back in May, Hesamifard managed to conquer the Everest.

Mount Everest is the highest mountain above sea level, located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas. The China–Nepal border runs across its summit point.
