Florida executes two inmates in one day as US broadens use of capital punishment
Florida has put to death two men on Tuesday, becoming the first US state to carry out two executions in a day since 1964.
On Tuesday, the state executed the 68-year-old James Duckett, a former police officer, by lethal injection at Florida State Prison near Starke for the 1987 kidnapping, rape and murder of a young girl. Prosecutors say Teresa Mae McAbee, 11, was abducted from a convenience store where she'd gone to buy a pencil, and her strangled, drowned body was found in a lake the next day.
Following the execution, Teresa Mae McAbee's mother, Dorthy Tula, hailed the move, saying "I'm glad all this is done… I've been waiting 40 years to have him dead."
Less than five hours later, Dominick Occhicone, the octogenarian, was executed at 6:00 pm at the same death chamber following a three-drug injection for the 1986 murder of his ex-girlfriend Anita Gerrety's parents.
The US Supreme Court denied Occhicone's last-minute appeals Tuesday afternoon along with Duckett's.
Occhicone was the oldest person executed in modern Florida history and the 12th inmate put to death in Florida this year.
In part, "today marks the end of a long and painful journey for our family,” the victims' children said in a statement.
"We will continue to honor our parents by living with kindness and love for each other. We love you Mom and Dad and we will always honor you with love in our hearts."
It marked the first time since 1964 that Florida executed two inmates on the same day.
