With no payback over Capital riot costs, US National Guard forced to cancel trainings

Members of the US National Guard rest in the Visitor Center of the US Capitol on January 13, 2020.

The US National Guard has been forced to cancel some of its trainings after Congress failed to reimburse the costs of the forces’ deployment to end former US President Donald Trump's supporters raid against the Capital premises on January 6.

Six events from the Nebraska National Guard were called off after the lawmakers did nothing to defray the expenses, The Hill reported.

“There will likely be more things that would be canceled if the funding is not restored,” National Guard Bureau spokesman Wayne Hall said.

There were concerns among authorities that lack of money could affect the readiness of the forces for crackdown on protests, such as the one in support of Trump, who has alleged he emerged victor in the 2020 presidential election.

“Without reimbursement funding, there is significant impact on National Guard readiness if we're not able to resolve this in a timely manner," said Army Gen. Daniel Hokanson, the chief of the National Guard Bureau, in a statement on July 17.

The National Guard was deployed as the Capitol Police was overwhelmed by the number of Trump supporters, who stormed the Capitol after their leader asked them to.

There are said to be more than 500 riot cases so far, involving those incited by the former president to prevent the certification of now-President Joe Biden’s victory by Congress.

The reserve components of the United States Army and Air Force had earlier warned that they would have to cancel some of their programs unless they were paid for the operation to end the protest.
