Biden is failing on a major humanitarian crisis: Analyst

American political analyst Myles Hoenig says US President Joe Biden is failing on a major humanitarian crisis on America’s southern border.

Hoenig, a former Green Party candidate for Congress, said in an interview with Press TV on Saturday that agribusiness and capitalism are the root cause of the exodus from Latin American countries.

The situation of migrants in border concentration camps was already critical under the former US administration, but recent reports are revealing a whole new level of ugly.

One of the promises of the Biden administration was ending the miseries of the people somehow stuck in the US border crisis, especially children, but new footage from some of these concentration camps are exposing the horrid realities of their lives.

“Regardless of the politics, what’s happening on our southern border is a humanitarian crisis. Unaccompanied minors are streaming over the borders looking for sanctuary and a new and better way of life. Very few in this country argue for open borders, but they are here and should not be turned away. The US has the resources to care for them and with so many military bases scattered throughout the Southwest, there’s plenty of room to house them in decent facilities,” said Hoenig.

“Of course the argument is that the US should be closing the borders because of the Trump Pandemic. But Mexico, and the other Latin American countries, are at a disadvantage regarding vaccines. Cuba alone can’t accommodate the whole world, as much as it tries,” he stated.

“Giving up your children in order to secure a future for them is almost as heartbreaking as willingly separating them from their parents, as the Obama and Trump administrations have done. So we have to look at the causes and the roots of such a phenomena. Many are escaping gangs and death squads as drug money sets much of the conditions of the squalor and hopelessness. The police in many of the countries where these children come from are inimically tied to the drug trade. Yet there’s little difference here in the US,” he said.

“Police are routinely involved in shakedowns and personal profiteering, but the bulk of the drug money for US police forces come from US taxes to ‘combat’ drugs, turning the US into as much of a police state as anywhere else,” he noted.

“The other factor that drives families to desperate measures is our economic policies that turn family farms into agribusinesses, forcing generations of farmers into day laborers. Again, not very different than in the US, where the family farm is nearly extinct and Congress is bought and paid for by such large agricultural enterprises,” the analyst said.

“President Biden is failing as president on this issue. If one is going to condemn the brutality of a previous administration, the new administration, president, vice president, and Congress, needs to be fully transparent and show leadership in this humanitarian crisis,” he concluded.
