Harry Dunn family in bid to stop expansion of RAF Croughton

The US government is reportedly planning to transform RAF Croughton into its primary listening station for the entire African continent

The family of tragic teenager Harry Dunn has started a campaign to halt the planned expansion of RAF Croughton by US spy chiefs.

The sprawling RAF base in Northamptonshire houses the most important US spy base in Europe.

It is also where Harry Dunn was killed when former US spy Anne Sacoolas drove into his motorcycle last August. Sacoolas was driving on the wrong side of the road at the time.

Sacoolas, who is married to a serving US spy, claimed diplomatic immunity and promptly fled the UK, partly aided by the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

In December 2019 Sacoolas was charged by the Crown Prosecution Service of causing death by dangerous driving, a crime that can attract a prison sentence of up to 14 years.

In a fresh blow to the grieving Dunn family it is being reported that US spy chiefs are planning a £200 million expansion of RAF Croughton to house a staggering extra 1,500 American intelligence agents.

Currently the base houses 250 US intelligence agents, in addition to around 300 American defense contractors and British Ministry of Defense officials.

The Dunn family fears that the dramatic expansion of the base will lead to more crashes involving US personnel who have little to no compunction about breaking the law, in the knowledge they are likely to get away with the consequences.

Indeed, there have been at least three near-misses this year on the same stretch of road where Harrly was killed.

As part of their campaign to halt the expansion of RAF Croughton the Dunn family has been joined by local MP Andrea Leadsom who appears keen to stop the US government overhauling the site amid fears about future crashes.

To that end, Leadsom, who is the MP for the South Northamptonshire constituency, is planning to trigger an emergency debate on the issue in the House of Commons on Thursday 09 July.

According to unconfirmed reports, the expansion of RAF Croughton is designed to transform the base into the US intelligence service’s listening station for the entire African continent.
