Press TV has conducted an interview with Ali al-Ahmed, director of the Institute for [Persian] Gulf Affairs (IGA) in Washington, to discuss the recent bomb attack targeting a mosque in Saudi Arabia’s southwestern region of Asir.
The following is a rough transcription of the interview.
Press TV: First of all I would like to get your initial reaction to this bombing that has taken place. What do you make of it?
Ahmed: It is expected because the Saudi government has been sowing the seed of terrorism and violence in the country. As we all know thousands of Saudi terrorists have launched attacks in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and other countries so it was not unexpected for this attack to happen. It was not a shock, whatsoever, the same apparatus supported by the Saudi government that has targeted mosques in Qatif and Dammam is attacking the police mosques, police who have now been demoralized and started to question the Saudi war on the Yemeni people.
Press TV: So what kind of repercussions will this have? Do you think this was something that was planned by the Saudi regime or is the situation getting out of hand?
Ahmed: There is a possibility this was what we call a false-flag operation faced by deteriorating economic condition that Saudi government now is not able to meet its budget. It is borrowing over 70 billion dollars to cover its deficit. The security forces in the country have basically had enough of the Saudi war on the Yemeni people, so it could have been a Saudi government attack. They have done this in Yemen, in Syria, in Iraq and even in Kuwait. So this could have been an operation to gain the support or regain control of the security forces.
As you know in times of war when you lose a war, the security forces and the army turn against the political leadership and we see examples of that happening in Saudi Arabia, maybe the Saudi government wants to stop that from happening by bombing the same people so it can gain their loyalty.
Press TV: So I guess the question is will it work?
Ahmed: Well we do not really know. Let us hope that the people in the security forces would understand. They know that the Saudi government has done this in other countries and even in the Eastern Province and in Kuwait, so hopefully they will realize this was an inside operation.
