Israel attempts to reverse BDS will fail: Activist

Press TV has conducted an interview with Bruce Katz, co-president of Palestinian and Jewish Unity in Montreal, about the US Senate passing a controversial trade bill that contains provisions opposing the growing international boycott movement against Israel.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: What do you make of this provision in the bill which basically tries to contain the BDS movement?

Katz: Well there is nothing surprising about it. I think what it does it highlights the chain of command which oversees this whole attempt to blackmail, to intimidate those who support boycott, divestment and sanctions against the Israeli apartheid.

Essentially what we see here is the policy developed in Tel Aviv by the Netanyahu … [regime] directed to Israel’s lobbies, most specifically in western countries like the United States and Canada, and imposed upon essentially subservient politicians especially the Republican Party in the United States. What I think will happen is that this will simply lend still greater impetus to the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement which now I think it is at a point where the BDS movement was against the South African apartheid, at a point where it became irreversible.

And I think this is what…Israel has recognized is that the BDS movement is irreversible. They seem to feel that they can reverse it by using their leverage over Western political elites. However in Europe attitudes are not quite what they are in North America and I think that ultimately this will fail.

Press TV: You said that sentiments in Europe are very different from what they are in America at least in a holistic point of view when it comes to the BDS movement. So how do you see these European states responding specifically when there will be public pressure to keep that BDS movement going?

Katz: Well this is a thing and we will have a choice to make. They will cave in to manipulation and blackmail which essentially finds as its source the hold that the Israel lobby has over certain political elements - be it in the United States, Canada or elsewhere in the Western world - and the fact that BDS is ever more popular with populations of those countries and that Israel is now viewed as being exactly what it is, that is an apartheid state.
