NYPD officer who killed Akai Gurley reportedly indicted

Akai Gurley was shot dead by rookie officer Peter Liang in Brooklyn on November on November 20, 2014

The rookie NYPD police officer who shot dead Akai Gurley, an unarmed African American, in Brooklyn has reportedly been indicted.

Several US media outlets reported on Tuesday that NYPD Officer Peter Liang has been indicted by a grand jury.

On November 20, 2014, Gurley was killed in Brooklyn by the rookie cop who entered the stairwell of his apartment building.

Authorities initially said he died due to an accidental discharge but Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said last December that a grand jury was convening to investigate his death.

A spokeswoman for Thompson declined to confirm Tuesday’s reports over Liang’s indictment, saying the office was “precluded by grand jury secrecy.”

Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio released a statement, saying, “It has been reported that a Brooklyn grand jury has acted in this case. No matter the specific charges, this case is an unspeakable tragedy for the Gurley family. We urge everyone to respect the judicial process as it unfolds.”

The shooting death of Gurley, who had a 2-year-old daughter, prompted Black Lives Matter protesters to hit streets in New York and elsewhere in the country to demand an indictment for the NYPD officer.

The unarmed black man was killed inside the darkened stairwell of the Louis Pink housing project in East New York, Brooklyn.
