The Tunisian anti-corruption commission has published a report estimating the fortune embezzled by ousted ruler Zine El Abidine Ben Ali at nearly 20 billion dollars deposited in foreign banks. However, 4 years after the 2011 popular uprising, authorities in Tunis have failed in recovering the money.
MPs denounce the lack of transparency and the absence of information provided by foreign financial institutions and governments when Tunisians demand the recovery of the embezzled assets.
The civil society slams the impunity toward the former dictator who fled to Saudi Arabia in 2011 without being held accountable for 23 years of corruption.
Next week, a government will take office amid a deep economic crisis and a growing demand for the recovery of billions of dinars and the extradition of Ben Ali.
Analysts say the recovery of the stolen assets will be an important achievement in the fight against corruption and will deliver a strong message to Ben Ali's clan in Tunisia and abroad.
