Left-wing presidential hopeful Jean-Luc Mélenchon from the France Unbowed (LFI) party has vowed to enforce the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a speech addressing some 20,000 supporters at a mass rally in Le Bourget on the outskirts of Paris on Saturday, the 75-year-old presidential candidate said, "We must change everything."

Mélenchon pledged to cap prices for essential food products, raise the minimum wage, and restore the country's retirement age to 60, among other promises that include raising taxes on the wealthy.

He also promised to enforce the ICC’s arrest warrant against Netanyahu and immediately withdraw France from NATO.

He mentioned the publication of his book, “The Common Future” [L'Avenir en Commun], published last week, as the LFI party's government plan.

It outlines the action plan of the government if he is elected to office in France's upcoming 2027 presidential election.

The new edition of the book sets out about 1,000 pledges covering the Palestinian issue and recognizing the killing of hundreds of Algerians by French police during a peaceful demonstration in Paris on Oct. 17, 1961, as a “state crime.”

He also targeted French President Emmanuel Macron from the center-right, blaming him for the violent police crackdown on demonstrations in France over the past months.

Mélenchon said Macron was presiding over a "dark end to his reign."

"We are living through a strange moment. It is the death throes of the Macron era marked by savagery, police brutality, and the unpredictable, violent outbursts at the end of demonstrations," he said.

"We are paving the way for a major political shift in France," added Mélenchon.

"I have only one reasonable thing to propose to you. It is, in fact, quite moderate. Just one thing: we must change everything," he asserted.

In the 2022 French presidential election, Mélenchon came in third with 21.95 percent of the vote, almost one point short of qualifying for the second round.

The Moroccan-born former teacher is viewed by observers as the strongest contender on the Left.

He is Gen Z’s favorite candidate, and recent opinion polls suggest he will reach the presidential runoff next April, competing against far-right candidate Marine Le Pen.

Mélenchon has said that the far-right under Le Pen had "no idea other than racism."
