Talks on Strait of Hormuz
Iran’s Foreign Minister says negotiations on a proposed two-day initiative concerning the Strait of Hormuz are continuing through Qatari mediators, but a final agreement hinges on Washington’s response. Speaking about the recent talks in Doha, Abbas Araghchi stressed that a final agreement hinges on whether the United States opts for rational engagement rather than pursuing other courses of action. He added that while Iran remains committed to diplomacy, its armed forces are fully prepared for all scenarios. Under the proposed two-day initiative, the US must first meet a set of conditions on day one, including lifting sanctions, reducing its military presence in the region, and unfreezing Iranian assets. Tehran would then reopen shipping lanes on day two.
Israel Gaza strikes
At least nine Palestinians have been killed and several others injured in fresh Israeli strikes targeting the Gaza Strip. Five of those killed lost their lives in a drone strike on the al-Mawasi area of Khan Yunis. Fatalities also took place in an attack on Gaza City. The strikes were carried out despite the so-called ceasefire that was reached in October last year. Since the genocidal war broke out, over 74,500 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza.
France protest arrests
France’s Interior Ministry has confirmed the arrest of nearly 800 people during the third consecutive Saturday of nationwide protests. According to French authorities, more than 300,000 people took part in nationwide demonstrations this weekend. This comes amid partial bans on rallies imposed by regional authorities. Further protests are reportedly planned for several days next week. The demonstrations initially erupted at schools, where students voiced their anger over educational conditions. The protests then escalated into mass demonstrations, with trade unions, and members of the Yellow Vest movement taking to the streets to protest the rising cost of living and demand increased funding for education.
