A Saudi strike on a house in Yemen’s northern Sa'ada province killed nine people and injured 11 others on Sunday, according to Yemen’s official Saba news agency.
The attack hit a house in the al-Tuwaila area of Sahar district, the agency reported, citing a local source.
Women and children were among the victims, while the casualty figures remain preliminary and could rise, according to the report.
Yemen’s armed forces spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree said in a statement that Saudi Arabia had carried out 53 airstrikes over the previous 24 hours on the capital, Sana’a, and five other provinces, killing and injuring large numbers of civilians.
He said Saudi fighter jets operating from the Khamis Mushait and Taif air bases targeted civilian areas in Sana’a and the provinces of Taiz, Ibb, Lahij, Saada and Amran.
The attacks on Yemeni territory come amid escalating exchanges between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s armed forces. Clashes between Yemeni forces and Saudi-backed fighters have also continued on several fronts, particularly in the city of Ta’izz.
In a separate statement, General Saree warned experts, engineers, workers and employees at Saudi oil facilities to stay away from the sites to protect their lives.
He also urged shipping companies, airport workers and passengers to keep away from locations he said could be targeted.
Saree further said that Yemeni forces had struck King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with a ballistic missile on Sunday, causing damage and disrupting flights. Loud explosions were also reported in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.
The latest escalation began after Saudi Arabia bombed Sana’a International Airport in July. Yemen’s armed forces responded by adopting a “blockade for blockade” policy and declaring an embargo on Saudi shipping in the Red Sea.
Yemeni forces have also expanded their presence along the western coast and around the strategic Bab al-Mandeb Strait, reclaiming areas previously held by Saudi-backed forces.
In March 2015, Saudi Arabia and its allies launched a large-scale military offensive against Yemen and imposed a blockade, with military, political, and logistical support from the United States and other Western countries.
The war has killed hundreds of thousands of Yemenis.
