US Senator Chris Murphy has sharply criticized the latest American military strike on a commercial cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman, labeling the underlying strategy of the ongoing blockade against the Islamic Republic of Iran a “disaster” for American taxpayers.
In a post on X on Thursday responding to reports of the incident, the Democratic senator from Connecticut asked: “What is this all for? Why are taxpayers paying billions to hit commercial ships?”
He continued that the apparent objective was “to gain leverage to convince the Iranians to let us pay them billions to return everything to the way it all was before the war. What a disaster.”
US Central Command (CENTCOM) claimed on Saturday that its forces “disabled” the Panama-flagged M/V Ocean Molica (also referred to as Arika Sun) after the vessel’s crew allegedly ignored repeated warnings while attempting to transit regional waters following departure from an Iranian port.
According to the US military statement, a fighter jet struck the stern of the ship with a precision munition, disabling its propulsion system while asserting that the crew was not harmed.
CENTCOM further stated that since resuming the naval blockade against ships entering or leaving Iranian ports on July 14, US forces have disabled four commercial vessels, turned back 135 ships, and destroyed 10 tankers.
The action forms part of the broader US and Israeli war of aggression against Iran that began in late February 2026 under the Trump administration, which has included extensive airstrikes, a naval blockade aimed at disrupting Iranian trade, and significant economic costs for both the region and the United States.
Independent observers have described the blockade as an illegal act of aggression that violates international law governing freedom of navigation and the rights of sovereign states to conduct legitimate commercial activity in their waters and the wider region.
The US war of aggression has contributed to elevated shipping costs, reduced transit volumes, and wider economic disruption -- outcomes that even American critics now acknowledge.
Last week, Senator Murphy stated that the Department of War denied him access to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar during a Middle East visit, describing the refusal as part of an effort by the Trump administration and War Secretary Pete Hegseth to conceal the full impact and costs of the war from Congress and the American public.
He has previously characterized the entire campaign as an unauthorized and strategically failed endeavor that has failed to achieve its stated objectives while imposing heavy burdens on US taxpayers and regional stability.
Other US lawmakers have voiced parallel concerns about the war and blockade measures. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries recently posted that “Donald Trump and House Republicans are crashing the economy. And hurting everyday Americans with their reckless war of choice in Iran.”
Representative Ro Khanna has repeatedly highlighted the absence of congressional authorization, noting past efforts with Representative Thomas Massie to advance war powers resolutions that would have constrained the conflict, and emphasizing the need to prioritize domestic needs over foreign military entanglements.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has previously pointed to the Strait of Hormuz blockade and the broader war as sources of economic pain for Americans, describing the campaign as poorly planned.
Senator Tim Kaine has underscored that congressional majorities in both chambers have voted to affirm that waging war against Iran without authorization is illegal.
