Activists and student groups protested outside the Greek parliament on Tuesday against the upcoming visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Outside parliament, about 1,500 people gathered to protest Rubio’s visit and the war in Iran, chanting “American killers”

The demonstration, organized by a communist labor union and other left-wing groups, was held ahead of extensive road closures planned in Athens on Wednesday. Organisers said protests were held in at least 12 other Greek cities.

Rubio arrived in Athens on Tuesday as part of a European trip that also includes Iceland and Portugal.

He leads the US delegation on Wednesday at the sixth US-Greece Strategic Dialogue, a high-level forum aimed at deepening cooperation between Washington and Athens on defence, energy, regional security and other issues. Rubio is also scheduled to meet Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis.
