Yemen has cautioned all international airlines against flying through Saudi airspace, urging them to take the warning seriously amid an escalating military confrontation between the two sides.
Yemen's Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center, in a statement published by the official Saba news agency on Monday, said the notice was directed at all airlines operating in Saudi skies as the kingdom's airspace could become a “theater of operations” for Yemeni armed forces.
The center further noted that the formal warning was also meant to safeguard civilian aviation and passengers.
It stated that Saudi military aircraft were carrying out attacks across Yemen, and Saudi airspace should therefore be considered unsafe for civilian aviation.
The center underlined that Yemeni armed forces will never target any civil aircraft flying over the holy Saudi cities of Mecca and Medina.
Meanwhile, Chairman of Yemen’s Supreme Political Council Mahdi al-Mashat has stressed that the Arab Peninsula nation’s strategic equations remain in effect until their objectives, cessation of the ongoing Saudi aggression and removal of the unjust blockade, are achieved.
The Sana’a administration declared a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia on July 20, in response to “an unfair and tyrannical siege” on Yemen lasting nearly 12 years.
The Yemeni military has announced several successful operations aimed at ships linked to Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea.
In March 2015, Saudi Arabia and its allies imposed a blockade on Yemen and launched a sweeping military campaign, backed by military, political, and logistical support from the United States and several Western countries.
The war has killed tens of thousands of Yemenis. However, Saudi Arabia has failed to achieve its stated objective of reinstating a puppet regime that serves its interests.
