Iran warning
Iran’s top general warns regional countries hosting US military bases that the flames of any new war against the Islamic Republic could spread across the region and affect everyone. Major General Ali Abdollahi also said any new US attack would immediately put American interests in the region within reach of Iranian armed forces. He said Iran’s response would be “powerful and painful,” adding that the armed forces would show no restraint. The commander further warned Israel that any new miscalculation or attack would draw a strong Iranian response. Abdollahi rejected claims that Iran’s nuclear activities have entered a new phase, saying such allegations by a nuclear-armed regime undermine international law. He also urged the IAEA to stop making what he called unfounded statements about Iran’s nuclear facilities.

France student protests

Clashes erupt on the streets of the French city of Lille after students resume nationwide demonstrations against the country’s education system. Students also rallied outside schools in Paris, blockading their entrance as they chanted slogans against the government. They are demanding better conditions in schools. Protesters cite overcrowded classes, heavy workloads and poor-quality learning materials. They also point to teacher shortages. France is keeping up to 500 schools closed on Monday, with government officials citing security concerns. A similar number of schools were closed on Friday. The protests began in a Paris suburb in mid-September and quickly spread nationwide. Only last week, police arrested over 5000 people, mostly minors. At least 170 students and dozens of education staff have also been injured in recent weeks.

Spain snap elections

The Spanish prime minister has called snap elections, days after parliament rejected emergency measures proposed by his minority government to address growing public anger over the housing crisis. Sanchez’s current coalition government, made up of his ruling Socialist party and junior partner the Sumar alliance, does not command a majority in parliament. He has been in office since 2018. The government’s efforts to address the housing crisis were set out in two motions that contained a range of measures. They aimed at improving access to housing, from a ban on evictions until 2030 to the regulation of temporary lettings and lettings by room. But the decrees were voted down in Congress on Friday. Protests over housing crisis erupted in Madrid and several other cities two weeks ago after an 87-year-old woman was evicted from her home in central Madrid.
