‘Attrition, low morale deepen strain on US troops amid war on Iran,’ analyst says
Veterans Affairs' psychiatrist and political commentator, Rick Staggenborg argues that US military aggression against Iran has placed American forces under severe strain, contending that US bases across the Persian Gulf region have been evacuated following repeated attacks.
In an interview with Press TV on Tuesday, he touched on the underreporting of casualties and the mounting operational and logistical pressures reflected in the prolonged deployment of US forces.
Staggenborg pointed to the USS Abraham Lincoln as evidence of deteriorating morale among US troops, citing reports of sailors going overboard, prolonged deployments, and poor conditions aboard the carrier. He also said requests for conscientious-objector status among personnel have increased, which he identified as another indication of growing opposition and strain within the US military.
He further argued that continued US support for the Israeli regime could become increasingly difficult if American public and military support for the aggression declined. Staggenborg also raised concerns about President Donald Trump’s unpredictable statements and decisions, while referring to psychiatrist Bandy X. Lee’s public arguments concerning presidential incapacity.
Staggenborg noted that Washington faced difficult choices as the aggression continued, arguing that US interference abroad had contributed to the current crisis. He raised the possibility of escalation to the nuclear level, but said some US military personnel could refuse such orders, citing Seymour Hersh’s reporting. He separately warned that the Israeli regime could pursue its own nuclear escalation, invoking the so-called concept of the “Samson Option” to describe the potential consequences.
