Saudi attacks on market in Yemen's Ta’iz leave 50 killed, injured
Some 50 people have been killed or injured in Saudi air strikes on a marketplace in southwest Yemen.
The spokesman of Yemen's military said on Sunday that Saudi fighter jets had carried out two attacks on the main market in the city of Ta'iz around noon local time.
Yahya Saree said that the same fighter jet had carried out four other attacks on the province of Jawf in northern Yemen.
Saree said the attack on the Mawiyah marketplace in Ta'iz, which killed civilians, would carry huge costs for Saudi Arabia.
News outlets, including the Reuters news agency, quoted Yemeni health officials as saying that the market attack had left seven people killed and another 40 injured.
Yemen's al Masirah news channel said the toll is initial and the number of fatalities from the attack is expected to rise, as other sources said wider Saudi attacks on areas in the province of Ta'iz had killed or injured 20 more people.
A spokesman for Yemen's ruling Ansarullah movement described the attack on people shopping in Ta'iz as a mass killing.
Mohammad Abdul Salam said on his X account that the attack is a clear sign that Saudi Arabia is determined to ruin the civilian infrastructure in Yemen.
“The Saudi regime continues to commit massacres and target civilian infrastructure and facilities, including bridges, buildings, and markets,” Abdul Salam said in the post.
Another statement from Yemen’s military said that Saudi Arabia had carried out some 1,059 attacks on Yemen since July, when a Saudi attack on the main airport in the Yemeni capital of San'aa triggered a new round of escalation in the decade-old conflict between the two neighbors.
The Yemenis have responded to Saudi attacks by targeting military and energy sites in the kingdom.
