US 'precision' missiles fired at Iran killed civilians 50 meters from impact zone: Report
Lockheed Martin’s Precision Strike Missile, which was used by the United States for the first time during its aggression against Iran, sprays pellets over a wide area, claiming the lives of civilians as far as 50 meters from the impact site, a report says.
A review by the conflict monitor Airwars and interviews with weapons experts and former defense officials highlighted the potential danger of deploying Lockheed Martin’s Precision Strike Missile near population centers.
Three missiles struck Iran’s southern city of Lamerd on February 28, killing civilians as far as 50 meters from where they detonated, and causing damage more than three times farther away, Airwars found.
The London-based nonprofit said the missiles detonated above a sports complex and two residential neighborhoods.
The attack killed at least 21 civilians, including children, according to Iranian authorities.
Airwars is the first to map the damage radius of the attacks in Lamerd and estimate the lethal range of the weapon used.
The PrSM is designed to detonate midair, dispersing tens of thousands of dense metal pellets at high speed in every direction.
The US military confirmed using PrSMs against Iran. However, it denied attacking Lamerd.
Photos, videos and satellite images of the aftermath of the Lamerd attacks analyzed by Airwars and verified by The Associated Press show buildings, streets and vehicles were heavily pockmarked in a blast pattern that experts say is consistent with the PrSM’s capabilities.
The United States and Israel launched the latest round of aggression against Iran on February 28, some eight months after the unprovoked attacks of June.
Iran decisively retaliated by launching barrages of missiles and drones at the Israeli-occupied territories, as well as US bases and interests across the region.
A ceasefire took effect on April 7, and on June 18, the presidents of Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to end the war and begin a 60-day diplomatic process to resolve the differences.
However, Washington violated the agreement. Renewed US strikes once again triggered Iranian retaliation.
