SCO Bishkek summit
Iran’s president calls on the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to play a more effective role in ensuring multilateralism by focusing on security and economic issues simultaneously. Masoud Pezeshkian told the SCO’s summit in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek that security and development are inseparable issues, adding that regional security hinges on respect for sovereignty of countries and avoiding use of force. The president said the US-Israeli attacks against Iran violated the UN Charter and international law. He said the way out of the crisis is return to commitments under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding. The president noted that Iran is ready to reciprocate immediately if the US returns to its obligations. Pezeshkian also proposed three initiatives in line with the SCO’s economic vision. He called for joint financial mechanisms and establishment of an SCO Bank. Pezeshkian also called for creation of institutions to support trade and investment, especially an SCO export insurance and investment association, as well as an energy consortium to ensure energy security for member states.
US war on Iran
A new American media report reveals more aspects of the lethality of a U-S attack on civilian areas in the recent war on Iran. The report says the US Army used extremely lethal munitions, with radius damage of at least 170 meters, in the strike on the city of Lamerd in southern Iran. According to the report, citing an analysis by conflict monitor Airwars, the Precision Strike Missile was reportedly used for the first time in the war on Iran. It was used near populated areas on the first day of the war. The missile sprayed thousands of pellets across a wide area. The strike killed civilians as close as 50 meters from the blast and caused damage more than three times farther away. The weapon exploded above a sports complex and two residential neighborhoods, killing at least 21 civilians, including seven children and two women. About 170 others were injured as well.
Russia-Ukraine war
Ukrainian officials say a Russian missile and drone attack on the capital Kiev and the surrounding region has killed at least eight people. The mayor of Kiev said the overnight strikes caused extensive damage. The chief executive of Ukrainian Railways also said a missile hit a railway depot and other related facilities. Regarding Moscow’s account of the attack, the Russian Defense Ministry said that military-industrial, fuel and energy facilities were targeted in Kiev and the surrounding region. Both Russia and Ukraine have escalated long-range strikes in recent months, targeting infrastructure such as warehouses.
