Leader underlines Muslim unity
The leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution says triumph of Islam, and Muslims playing an epochal role, have never been nearer at hand, but these will materialize only with the unity of the Islamic world. Ayatollah Seyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei says anyone feeding division among Muslims has been helping enemies, even if this is done inadvertently. Ayatollah Khamenei made the comments in a message to the 40th Islamic Unity Conference. The leader reiterated his call to Islamic heads of state, especially those in the Persian Gulf region, to know their real enemy and its plots, and counter them. Ayatollah Khamenei called the rulers of the US and Israel criminal and sworn enemies of the unity and friendship of all Muslims, even those in the Persian Gulf and West Asia regions. The leader rejected the claim that the enmity is solely directed at the Islamic Republic and the Islamic resistance front. He said the past years have clearly shown that the US and Israel have not spared even the rulers of Islamic countries, who are complicit with them, from their insulting language.
Controversial oil deal
Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodriguez has defended her country’s oil deal with the US, which allows Washington to take control of 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil. Rodrigues said 19 Dollars, from each barrel produced and sold under the deal, will flow directly to Venezuela. While some analysts say the US takeover of Venezuelan oil reflects the country’s loss of sovereignty, Rodrigues said the 25-year deal allows Caracas to preserve ownership and sovereignty of its resources. Critics, however, have described the deal as predatory and rapacious land grab. A protest has also been held in Caracas, with demonstrators carrying signs reading “Yankees out of Venezuela”.
Nepal-Tibet flooding
The death toll from the flooding that hit Nepal-Tibet border has hit 750. Most of the fatalities took place in Nepal and few of them were reported in China’s Tibet. Over 3,000 people are still missing as rescue operations continue. Some 320 foreign nationals are among the missing. Poor weather and challenging terrain are hampering the rescue efforts. The disaster occurred on Wednesday when part of a glacier collapsed in the Himalayas, plunging over 1,000 meters and gathering rock and debris before slamming into a river.
