Aerial footage shows massive floods in Nepal's Rasuwa district
Aerial footage shot on Wednesday showed severe flooding in the valleys of Nepal's northern Rasuwa district.
A massive flash flood killed at least nine people on Wednesday in the Himalayan border areas of Nepal and adjoining Tibet, washing away villages, damaging roads, bridges and power projects, with authorities fearing more casualties.
Reuters confirmed the location from the buildings, roads and terrain, which matched satellite imagery of the area. The date was confirmed by authorities in Nepal, who said the flash flood hit Syapru Besi and Timure in Rasuwa. Corroborating videos of the same scene also showed floodwaters rushing down the valley.
Houses and roads were swept away in Nepal while officials in Tibet said they feared "major casualties," with some missing in the county of Gyirong after a mudslide hit a land crossing between the neighbors.
Nepal's rescue helicopters would be unable to land in the affected areas until the waters recede, army spokesperson Raja Ram Basnet said. The cause of the inundation was not immediately clear, but a deadly flash flood on the same river last year was eventually traced to the draining of a glacier lake.
