Slamming US economic ‘terrorism’
Iran’s foreign ministry has condemned as economic terrorism, the US threat of a stepped-up economic war against the country. The ministry’s spokesman says the US has been leading the same policy in vain under other titles, including an alleged maximum pressure campaign. Esmail Baqaei says Iran does not have its hands tied and will use every capability to counter the campaign of sanctions and threats. He made the comments in his weekly presser. The spokesman said Iranians are being punished for insisting on their sovereignty and independence. He warned of consequences for those who help the US advance its campaign of sanctions and naval blockade. His comments come after the US threatened Iran with an economic D-Day with an embargo set to begin Monday.
Iran court ruling
Iran has begun distributing proceeds from the sale of US oil cargo to 771 Iranian patients with epidermolysis bullosa, following a court ruling that awarded them compensation over the impact of US sanctions. The head of Branch 55 of Tehran’s International Court said the court seized a US-owned tanker in the Persian Gulf in 2023 and sold its oil cargo after completing the required legal procedures. He said the proceeds, estimated at 36 to 37 million dollars, were deposited into the judiciary’s account, and orders have now been issued to distribute the funds to the affected patients. The court ruled that US sanctions had contributed to the patients’ loss of access to essential medicines and medical dressings. The official added that compensation would later be extended to other Iranian patients, including those with thalassemia, who have filed similar cases.
Russia-Ukraine war
The Ukrainian military says it has struck a Russian MIG-29 fighter aircraft and two Russian vessels in the Black Sea. Kiev says one of the vessels attacked was a tanker and the other was a bulk carrier. Moscow says four logistics hubs owned by Russia’s second-largest online retailer Ozon were targeted by Ukrainian drones. The attack caused heavy damage and fire at the facility. Russia also says its air defense system has intercepted and shot down a total of 269 Ukrainian drones over multiple regions across the country. Ukraine has stepped up its drone attacks in recent weeks.
