Iran's Homer Abbasi wins West Asian swimming gold in Astana
Iran's Homer Abbasi claimed the men's 100-meter backstroke gold medal on Saturday, clocking 57.45 seconds on the opening day of the 2026 AOSI West Asian Swimming Championships in Astana.
Abbasi produced a commanding performance in the open-category final, leading from start to finish to hand Iran its first gold medal of the regional championships.
The Iranian swimmer turned at the halfway mark in 27.58 seconds before completing the second 50 meters in 29.87 seconds to finish in 57.45.
Mansur Raziyev took the silver medal in 58.97 seconds, while Alan Muratkali finished third in 59.59 seconds.

The two-day AOSI West Asian Swimming Championships opened Saturday at the Nazarbayev University Aquatic Center in Kazakhstan's capital, bringing together swimmers from across West Asia. The competition runs through Sunday.
Abbasi's victory gave Iran an encouraging start to the championships and marked an important step in the swimmer's preparations for the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan.
The national team member from Iran's Golestan Province is expected to use the regional event as part of his build-up toward the continental showpiece later this year, where swimming medals will be contested alongside the broader Asian Games program.
