Israeli airstrike kills police chief in northern Gaza: Officials
An Israeli airstrike has killed Brigadier General Abdel-Nasser Al-Maqadma, the head of the police force in the northern Gaza Strip, according to Gaza's Interior Ministry and local medics.
The Interior Ministry said Al-Maqadma, who also served as governor of northern Gaza, was killed in an airstrike targeting the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, north of Gaza City, on Saturday.
In separate strikes, medics reported that a Palestinian paramedic was killed in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, while a police officer who had been wounded in an Israeli strike last week later succumbed to his injuries.
Israel has targeted numerous members of the police force in recent months, including senior officials, alleging many were affiliated with Hamas' military wing and posed security threats to Israeli forces in Gaza.
Hamas, however, says the strikes are aimed at undermining law enforcement, spreading instability, and violating the US-brokered ceasefire that came into effect in October.
Despite the ceasefire, Israeli strikes have continued almost daily. During the same period, four Israeli soldiers have been killed in attacks by Palestinian resistance fighters inside Gaza.
Diplomatic efforts led by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the United States to advance a US-backed proposal for ending the war have so far made little progress. The plan calls for Hamas to disarm and for Israeli forces to withdraw from Gaza.
Since the ceasefire that took effect on October 10, 2025, the Israeli occupation regime has killed 1,191 Palestinians and wounded 3,853 others in Gaza. More than 803 bodies have also been recovered from under the rubble during this period.
Since launching its genocidal war on October 7, 2023, Israel has martyred at least 73,317 Palestinians and injured over 173,811 others in the blockaded territory. Nearly 90% of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed.
Despite the supposed ceasefire, Israel persists with its genocidal campaign, openly planning to occupy and control around 70% of the Gaza Strip while forcibly confining the remaining population of nearly two million Palestinians to just 30% of their land.
