‘Where is Grossi?’: Iran hits back at IAEA silence over US attacks on nuclear sites
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei has hit back at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over its silence on US threats to attack nuclear facilities in the Islamic Republic.
“The repeated US attacks and threats against Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities not only constitute a flagrant violation of the core principles of the UN Charter, international law, and the relevant resolutions of the IAEA Board of Governors, General Conference, and UN Security Council, but also reveal the United States’ deep-rooted enmity toward Iran’s scientific progress and technological development,” Baghaei said in a post on his X account on Wednesday.
He noted that Iran’s nuclear activities “have been fully declared to the IAEA in accordance with its safeguards obligations.”
Baghaei also criticized the silence of IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, asking, “By the way, where is the Director General of the IAEA, who is also a candidate for UN Secretary-General?”
The remarks came as US President Donald Trump threatened to "very strongly" strike Mountain Kolang in central Iran over allegations that an underground nuclear facility had been constructed beneath the mountain. Baghaei stressed that no nuclear activity is taking place beneath the mountain.
The spokesman emphasized that Washington’s “obsessive” focus on the mountain “is nothing more than a fabricated pretext for aggression, destruction, and sabotage.”
Baghaei also expressed the readiness of the “resolute and united” Iranian nation “to confront with full strength any act of US hostility or violation of their country’s sovereignty and national security.”
Over the past several days, the US military has conducted waves of deadly strikes on southern Iran and reinstated an illegal blockade of Iranian ports in flagrant violation of a war-termination deal.
In response, Iranian armed forces have launched heavy reprisal attacks against strategic American targets across the region, and declared the Strait of Hormuz closed.
