'Iranian Red Crescent on humanitarian front lines amid US aggression'
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) says attacks on civilian infrastructure are unequivocally prohibited under the Geneva Conventions and cannot be justified. Speaking to Press TV, IFRC MENA Regional Director Hossam Elsharkawi praised the Iranian Red Crescent for carrying out "incredible, risky humanitarian missions" under extremely challenging conditions and called for increased international support to help scale its response based on their priorities.
Elsharkawi stressed that the laws of war are clear: civilian infrastructure must never be targeted. He described such attacks as unacceptable violations of international humanitarian law that require action by governments and diplomats.
While emphasizing that humanitarian assistance remains vital to saving lives and alleviating suffering, Elsharkawi said it cannot substitute for the political solutions needed to achieve lasting peace. He reaffirmed the IFRC's commitment to supporting the Iranian Red Crescent through enhanced assistance and coordination, while urging the international community to address violations and act to end the ongoing humanitarian suffering.
