Iran offers condolences, aid to Venezuela after deadly earthquakes

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi (R) and Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil Pinto

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has expressed condolences and offered Iran's assistance to Venezuela following two deadly earthquakes that struck the country.

In a phone call with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil Pinto on Saturday, Araghchi conveyed the sympathies of the Iranian government and nation to the Venezuelan people and government, particularly the families of the victims.

Araghchi also wished a speedy recovery for those injured in the devastating quakes and emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran stands by the Venezuelan people during this difficult time.

The Iranian foreign minister announced Tehran's readiness to provide any assistance and participate in search and rescue operations, according to the Foreign Ministry.

The twin earthquakes – measured at magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 by the US Geological Survey – struck north-central Venezuela within 40 seconds of each other on Wednesday evening, collapsing buildings in the capital Caracas and severely damaging coastal states including La Guaira, Carabobo, Miranda, Aragua and Falcon.

According to the government statistics, 920 people have been killed and 3,360 others injured. However, many more people are still unaccounted for, and as time passes, they are feared to be perishing under the rubble.

Venezuelan authorities announced more than 50,000 people remain missing in thousands of collapsed structures.

Rescuers keep searching for survivors, and families wait desperately for news of their missing ones.
