Pezeshkian, Sharif vow to deepen ties in first post-deal call

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian (R) and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral relations during their first official conversation since the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

During a 30-minute telephone call on Thursday, Pezeshkian thanked Sharif and Pakistan’s Chief of Defense Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for their mediation efforts, describing their role in facilitating the agreement as vital.

Sharif congratulated Pezeshkian, Iran’s leadership, and the Iranian people on the "landmark agreement" aimed at restoring stability in the region.

“This landmark deal would not only help restore peace in the region, but also go a long way in rebuilding the Iranian nation and further strengthening Pakistan-Iran ties, across all areas of mutual interest,” Sharif said, according to a statement released from the Pakistan Prime Minister's Office.

The Pakistani premier, who received the call from Pezeshkian, also conveyed his regards to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei and praised Tehran’s decision to accept the accord.

“While lauding Iran’s decision to sign the peace deal, the Prime Minister wished the Iranian side success in the next phase of negotiations and assured the Iranian President of Pakistan’s continued support to Iran, both as a brotherly and neighboring country, in all spheres,” the statement further read.

The Iranian president expressed appreciation for Pakistan's “extremely critical role in steering the mediation process with great skill and sincerity,” adding that Iran would “always remember Pakistan's positive and constructive efforts and its support for Iran during these difficult times.”

Pezeshkian further conveyed his best wishes to the Pakistani people and stressed Tehran’s determination to deepen cooperation with Islamabad across all “areas of mutual interest.”

The two leaders also agreed to exchange visits at the earliest opportunity to advance bilateral and regional cooperation and pledged to remain in close contact in the coming days.

The 14-point MoU, signed remotely by Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, calls for a permanent end to hostilities across all fronts, including Lebanon, oil export waivers, the removal of the US naval blockade on Iran within 30 days, and the restoration of commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

The draft agreement also includes a reconstruction and economic development plan for Iran worth at least $300 billion, the phased lifting of US sanctions, the release of Iran’s frozen assets, and a renewed Iranian commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, while further negotiations continue over Tehran’s enriched uranium stockpile.
