War on Iran should not have started, no point in continuing it: China

China says it sees “no point” for the United States to continue its war against Iran, as the conflict is taking a heavy toll on global stability and energy security.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said that there is “no point in continuing this conflict which should not have happened in the first place.”

"To find an early way to resolve the situation is in the interest not only of the US and Iran, but also of regional countries and the rest of the world,” he added.

Guo made the statement at the end of a two-day summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump in Beijing.

When asked about Beijing’s view on the US-Israeli aggression against Iran, Guo said the war “has inflicted severe losses on the people in Iran and other regional countries.”

He warned that “the conflict has put a heavy strain on global economic growth, supply chains, international trade order and the stability of global energy supply, which hurts the common interests of the international community.”

The spokesman stressed that the momentum toward de-escalation should be preserved and that negotiations should continue in order to reach a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire as soon as possible.

“China always believes that dialogue and negotiation is the right way forward, and the use of force is a dead end.”

Since the US and Israel launched their unprovoked war against Iran in late February, China has been working with Pakistan to advance proposals aimed at safeguarding peace and stability in the Persian Gulf and the wider West Asia region, noted the spokesman.

The two countries have jointly issued a five-point initiative for restoring peace and stability in the Gulf and West Asia.

Talks between Washington and Tehran, however, have so far failed due to the US’s excessive demands.
