Israeli army struggles to counter Hezbollah’s expanding drone operations: Report

Israel is still searching to find effective countermeasures against the increasingly advanced drones deployed by the Hezbollah resistance movement in southern Lebanon, according to an Israeli media report, underscoring the regime's growing operational challenges in the region.

Israel’s public broadcaster KAN quoted sources as saying the army has recently deployed “smart targeting systems” in southern Lebanon in an attempt to improve its capacity to track and intercept Hezbollah’s drones.

The report noted that hundreds of “Dagger” night-vision scopes have also been handed out to Israeli soldiers to boost their accuracy when firing at moving targets at night.

Hezbollah’s fibre-optic drones have become one of the Israeli army’s most serious threats in southern Lebanon due to their low detectability and Israel’s inability to reliably intercept them, the broadcaster said.

Late last month, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu conceded that Hezbollah’s missiles and drones pose “two major threats,” asking military commanders to urgently devise solutions, an unusual public admission of the occupying army’s shortcomings.

On Saturday, the Israeli military said a Hezbollah drone strike wounded an officer and two soldiers in southern Lebanon, leaving one in serious condition.

Hezbollah said it carried out several operations targeting Israeli military vehicles, troop gatherings, and positions across southern Lebanon, adding that it also intercepted an Israeli drone during the same period.

The resistance movement said these operations were a direct response to repeated Israeli breaches of the ceasefire and ongoing strikes on civilian areas in southern Lebanon.

Despite a ceasefire in effect since April 17, extended through mid-May, Israel continues daily attacks in Lebanon.

Israel’s assaults on Lebanon since March 2 have killed more than 2,700 people and displaced over one million civilians.
