Iran’s foreign minister will meet President Putin in Moscow: Ambassador

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday to discuss the latest developments following a temporary ceasefire that halted US and Israeli attacks against the Islamic Republic.

Iran’s Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali told IRNA that Araghchi will meet with Putin on Monday in the Russian capital, the last leg of his three-nation regional tour that also took him to Pakistan and Oman.

He said Iran and Russia share a common approach to regional and international issues.

The top Iranian diplomat’s visit to Moscow will take place as part of “close consultations” between the two countries, he added.

The envoy expressed appreciation for Russia’s firm stance on condemning the US-Israel war of aggression and its support for Iran at international forums, including vetoing the anti-Iranian resolution in the United Nations Security Council.

Since the beginning of the war on February 28, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and his Russian counterpart have held three phone calls while the two countries’ foreign ministers discussed developments by phone 11 times, he noted.

Jalali said the Iranian foreign minister will leave Moscow after meeting with the Russian president.

Araghchi, who was in Pakistan for the second time over the past 48 hours, left Islamabad for Moscow Sunday night.

Tensions have been running high in the region following the US-Israeli war of aggression against Iran, which was launched on February 28 with the assassination of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, and several top military commanders.

On April 8, forty days into the war, a Pakistan-brokered temporary ceasefire took effect. Talks ensued in Islamabad but stopped short of an agreement amid the United States’ maximalist demands and insistence on unreasonable positions.

Araghchi has been on a three-leg regional tour that included visits to Pakistan and Oman. Following discussions with senior Pakistani officials, he traveled to Muscat for a meeting with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq before returning to Islamabad for a short visit.
