‘Hiding aggressors’: Iran rebukes Bahrain's failed Security Council motion

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi

Iran’s deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs has stated that the security of the Strait of Hormuz cannot be secured by concealing the identity of the aggressors, stressing that it requires an end to aggression, punishment of the aggressors, accountability, and the rule of law.

In a post on X account on Wednesday, Kazem Gharibabadi commented on the Bahrain-proposed UN Security Council resolution on the Strait of Hormuz, which was vetoed a day earlier.

“The resolution, which was vetoed by two strategic partners of Iran, was based from the start on a clear inversion: speaking of ‘maritime security’ without mentioning what endangered that security,” Gharibabadi wrote.

He added that the recent crisis is neither sudden nor without origin, but rather the direct consequence of “criminal attacks by the United States and the Zionist regime against Iran.”

Gharibabadi noted that the drafters and backers of the text, even after revisions, sought to remove any reference to the aggressors, divorcing the crisis from its real root cause, “as if there had been neither the US president’s public threats to destroy vital infrastructure, nor his shameful talk of taking a nation back to the ‘Stone Age’.”

The senior diplomat emphasized that those who vote in favor of or advance such a narrative are no longer mere observers. “Political complicity with such distortion is complicity in the aggression and entails international responsibility under international law.”

He expressed regret that “American and Israeli aggressors, to advance their inverted narrative of the reality of aggression and their committed crimes, have pushed regional countries, especially Bahrain, to the forefront.”

In a direct message to regional neighbors, Gharibabadi stated, “The US and the Israeli regime will leave, while we and our neighbors will remain neighbors forever. The security of the Strait of Hormuz is not achieved by hiding the aggressor; it is achieved by stopping the aggression, punishing the aggressors, holding them accountable, and the rule of law.”

The anti-Iran draft resolution proposed by Bahrain, submitted on behalf of Persian Gulf Cooperation Council member states (excluding Oman) along with Jordan, concerning the Strait of Hormuz following US-Israeli aggression against Iran – was vetoed by Russia and China during the UN Security Council session on Tuesday.

The draft resolution received 11 votes in favor, two against (Russia and China), and two abstentions (Pakistan and Colombia). Due to the negative votes of Russia and China, the resolution was not adopted. Thus, the council, and particularly Bahrain, failed to advance its political objectives despite US support, even while Bahrain held the rotating presidency of the Security Council.
