Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Sistani, the revered Shia religious authority based in Najaf, has extended his congratulations to Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei on his election as the new Leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, expressing hope for his success in serving the great Iranian nation and repelling the "ill-wishers".

In a message on Wednesday, Grand Ayatollah Sistani honored the memory of the late Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, referring to him with the traditional honorific "Rizwanullahi Alayh" (May God's mercy be upon him).

"While commemorating the memory of the late Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Khamenei (may God's mercy be upon him), it is hoped that his esteemed successor (may God protect him) will be successful and supported in serving the great nation of Iran, in repelling the ill-wishers, and in preserving national unity and cohesion," the message read.

Iran's Assembly of Experts, the 88-member body of clerics responsible under the Constitution for appointing the country's highest political and religious authority, officially elected Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei as the third Leader of the Islamic Revolution on Sunday night.

The 56-year-old cleric succeeds his father, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, who was martyred in US-Israeli terrorist attacks on February 28 that targeted the Iranian capital.

The aggression, which also claimed the lives of senior Iranian military commanders and civilians, including the shocking strike on a girls' school in Minab that martyred around 170 innocent students, has been widely condemned as an act of unprovoked state terrorism.
