Tehran says the United States seeks to seize Iran’s oil reserves in an attempt to dominate global energy supplies as unprovoked aggression against the Islamic Republic by a US-Israeli military coalition enters its eleventh day.

In a post on his X account on Tuesday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stressed that seizing Iran’s oil is the primary objective of the ongoing war against the country, citing a Fox News article which describes Iran as the “final piece of the puzzle” in a broader strategy by Washington to dominate world energy supplies.

The article published on Monday, was endorsed by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. It came more than two months after the US kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a military onsalught that paved the way for Washington to seize oil reserves of the oil-rich country.

US President Donald Trump “has taken the shackles off the American oil and gas industries. The United States now controls the rebuilding of Venezuela’s energy industry. It has significant influence over its energy-rich [Persian] Gulf Arab allies. Iran would be the final piece of the puzzle, if the United States can help develop its oil resources,” the article read.

It added that if China’s access to discounted Venezuelan and Iranian oil is blocked, it will be forced to purchase market-priced oil and gas from the US to make up for the loss, considering that importing all of Russia’s energy capacity at a discount will not be enough to fulfil China’s energy needs.

The article argues that, following US control over Venezuela's oil sector and continued influence over Persian Gulf production, securing Iran's oil would severely restrict China's access to affordable energy—thereby curbing its technological and economic ascent, Baghaei stressed.

“As emphasized previously, Iran is not merely defending itself against this brutal war of aggression; it is defending the very principles of sovereignty and self-determination, the future of our region, and the broader interests of the global community,” Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson further noted.

Iran has responded massively to the aggression by attacking the Israeli regime and US military assets in regional countries, which has deeply affected the production and transport of oil and natural gas in the region.

Tehran has warned that the price of oil could reach historic records with a further escalation of the war.

Baghaei further warned that “this is a truly global issue that concerns independence, sovereignty, respect for international norms, and equitable access to energy resources.”

He also stressed that this broader strategy of oil-seizing being pursued by Washington “should alarm everyone, our neighbors in the region, our partners in the Global South, regional organizations, and people around the world to the reality that our struggle is also theirs—for sovereignty, for freedom, for energy justice, and for a law-based international order free from domination by bullying power politics.”
